Unit4 ERP: preparing for a seamless transition to the cloud with explained jargon

Migrating your on-premise Unit4 ERP solution to the cloud can be daunting. Understanding key Unit4 ERP terms helps you navigate the process more confidently. This blog is your guide, demystifying some essential, confusing, and new terms and highlighting how they contribute to a smooth cloud transition.

Demystifying Unit4 ERP jargon:

ERP CR (Continuous Release): Unit4 ERP7 in the public cloud is now ERP CR. Think of it as the constantly changing solution of Unit4 ERP. Once you are in the cloud, you will get regular updates, ensuring your cloud-based system stays current. It adapts to changing business needs, eliminating the need for manual upgrades and minimising disruption. Read more about Unit4 ERP CR.

ERPx: This is the next generation of ERP from Unit4. It is a fully web-based, cloud-native SaaS solution. ERPx offers incredible scalability and opportunity for innovation. This milestone goes one step further than ERP CR and lays the groundwork for future growth as your business evolves. There is no need to retrain as software is already familiar, but with added enhancements.  Read more about ERPx.

Beyond the buzzwords: How these terms benefit your cloud migration:

Now that we have discussed what those terms represent, we want to explore further what they mean for your business when transitioning from on-premises to the cloud.

ERP CR: Unit4 has compromised to deliver continuous updates in the cloud and has renamed its Unit4 ERP Milestone 7 to Unit4 CR. This way, you can always have the latest functionalities and security enhancements without manual upgrades, minimising disruption. Unit4’s multi-tenant infrastructure provides a secure foundation for these updates, keeping your system current and protected.

ERPx: Its flexible architecture allows for a smooth transition to the cloud and future scalability. Your system can effortlessly adapt to changing requirements without complex reconfigurations, ensuring a seamless migration and future-proofing your ERP investment.

Customisations: refer to modifications made to the standard Unit4 ERP system, to adapt it to specific business requirements. These changes can range from small adjustments to user interfaces to more complex calculations or changes in workflows. Most existing ERP7 customisations will move to the cloud, although the method used to create them may not be the best method for future customisations. Some customisations may need a deeper review and others may need to be reworked.

Integrations: connect your Unit4 ERP solution with other software applications to help you streamline your processes and get a better data flow. You can integrate your Cloud solution with CRMs, HR or financial systems to get a more unified business platform. You may have different types of integration to your on-premises ERP7 environment. Most of these: API, web service, file based, will move into the cloud. Be on the lookout for ‘direct to database integrations’.

Direct to database integrations: With this method, any updates to ERP data are written directly to the ERP database. This is not a valid practice in modern cloud. An alternative method will need to be found. This may be a short-term just ‘get into the cloud’ and then take time work on this, or fully built before migration.

Extension Kit & App Studio: empowering customization in the Cloud

Imagine Extension Kit as a toolbox for customisation, even in the cloud. It is available as soon as you migrate into Unit4 cloud. It empowers companies to add functionalities or adapt existing features to perfectly align with your unique business processes, ensuring your migrated system meets your specific needs even after the transition. Similarly, App Studio for ERPx is a low-code/no-code playground in the cloud, enabling IT and users to create custom applications that streamline workflows and address specific requirements without extensive coding expertise. This allows you to tailor your Unit4 Cloud ERP system to address new needs without lengthy development cycles.
